Culberson Advocating For Texas to Receive Portion of $500 Million Disaster Funding in Continuing Resolution

Statement

Date: Sept. 23, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Following the release of the continuing resolution appropriations bill, Representative John Culberson (TX-07) released the following statement:

"Texas has had six federal disaster declarations over the last two years. Thousands of Texans have been displaced from their homes and lost their businesses due to the severe flooding the State has experienced. I've worked with my colleagues and Republican leadership to include $500 million in disaster funding in the CR for these devastated communities. I will keep working to ensure that Texas receives its fair share of this important funding to help displaced homeowners and complete flood mitigation projects to prevent damage in future severe weather events."

Background:

Houston and the surrounding areas experienced a 500 year flood event in late April 2016 resulting in around 6,700 homes damaged in Harris County. According to NOAA, the Tax Day floods resulted in $1.2 billion in damages. This is the second major flood event that Congressional District 7 has experienced in the last 18 months.

In early September, Representative Culberson led a Texas delegation letter to House Republican leadership requesting that disaster funding for Texas be including in any supplemental appropriations bill.
